It’s three o’clock and while most Green Mountain High school students have gone home, the cleats of the boys soccer team are digging in for another practice as they gear up for the 2016 season. Through sun sweat and defensive strategy they have their eyes set on the state playoffs.
They are doing well in league play with a 2-0 record. They are playing some tough competitors and their overall standing is 4-5. They’ve had a few shutouts, including their last game which was against Littleton HS with a score of 2-0. John Barone, the head coach of the varsity states, “We play better defense […] winning more balls in the midfield and winning more balls in the back which creates more opportunities up front.” Christian Bautista, freshman JV player, confirmed the Rams’ defensive strategy as their best strength. “When we attack, we spread out and we all step forward to make it harder for them to gain possession.”
The team has an aspirational goal to make it to the state playoffs. They haven’t been able to achieve it in many years. In their quest to win more games, Bautista indicated they were working on getting their passing down. Coach Barone says that his personal goals for the team are “to make sure every one of them a better player and more importantly a better person.” From Barone’s perspective, it’s all about making sure “they still love the game at the end of it and play it their whole lives.”
Green Mountain fans who love soccer should know that they’re more than just players. Coach Barone states, “They are a great bunch of guys. We don’t have any kids that I have to worry about. We’ve got kids that get good grades. We’ve got kids that are very respectful and play the game how it should be played.” This comes as no surprise as Green Mountain athletes are leaders who reflect the pride of RamNation.
The Ram soccer team will have to face its toughest opponent yet, defending state champions Evergreen HS. With great Ram power comes great Ram responsibility. This team has what it takes to defeat the Cougars.
