Countless students each day flock to the library in hopes of checking out a book, using a study room, getting onto the computers, or just to have a place to to do their work, especially during lunch. That was until, the decision was made to close the library during the lunch hour, citing poor behavior.

“There’s a chair, one of those couches in the back corner, that had it’s legs broken off. We had it two months, and it cost $1,200.” Explained Mrs. Meyers. “McDonald’s lunch bags shoved under the furniture. There was bad language, hence the new sign.” She showed me her newly developed signage with clear guidelines as to what and what not to do, specifically condemning food, foul language, sassy attitudes, and general rudeness.; while promoting quiet study, academic discussion, phones (as long as they’re not distracting), and beverages with a lid. For some students, however, the library being closed may not be such a good thing.

“I come in to print stuff and finish up essays… I don’t come in here all the time, but when I do, it’s to legit do stuff, so the fact that it’s closed just makes it more stressful during the school day.” Haley Shaifer, a senior, commented. “Let’s say there’s a study group, but nobody has the same schedule. They usually would be like, ‘hey, let’s meet up in the library,’ because why would they do it out in the commons? Why would they go and drive to someone’s house when they only have 30 minutes to spare. Like if you’re working on a group project, or something, you’d just go meet up in the library.”

Much to student’s relief, starting after Thanksgiving break,  the library is reopening during lunch for those students who have a pass from a teacher.
