In our ongoing series “Meet your Assistant Principals”, we are talking with five of these essential educators and learning what brought them to GMHS, what their roles are, and what they enjoy most about the school.  We will continue the series with Mr. Van Tassel, the dean of the school. Staff reporter Grahm Tuohy-Gaydos was able to sit down with him for a few minutes to learn more about the dean.

Q: How long have you been at GMHS?

A: I have been here since around 2005, so this is my 13th year at GMHS

Q: How did you get into teaching?

A: My brothers and sisters were teachers, so I felt that I should follow in their footsteps.

Q: What are your roles and duties as the dean?

A:  I work mostly with freshmen discipline; If a couple of freshmen are making the wrong decisions, I make sure to try to help them get on the right track. I also work with attendance, making sure that if a student doesn’t show up to class, we notify their parent and make sure that they had a reason for not being in class.

Q: What is your favorite thing about GMHS?

A: GMHS is really a community that feels like home. It is close net, and I believe that is really what makes a community special.

Q: What is something you enjoy doing in your free time?

A: I really enjoy being with my wife and family in my free time.

Q: What is one thing that you would like the students to know about you?

A:  I would hope the students know that I am a lifelong educator. I’ve been following this career path for 28 years. I know that many students don’t know about me. I am always there for them, and even if they may think I am doing it differently then they might’ve, I am always putting their interests at the forefront.
